hi seb,
the cajun again here with another suggestion or 2. when we sellers input data for describing a stamp or a lot, it would be helpful to have list of internationally recognized symbols or checklist like the smileys to use. e.g.- MNH (**), MH (*), BLK OF 4, GUMMED, UNGUMMED, PERFORATED, IMPERFORATED, and etc. . also a list of common colors in the major languages would be very helpful and can be obtained from one of the major catalogs. and how about the image size of the stamps. often i see a stamp but the image is so small, i cannot see any detail. can we teach our members how to use their scanners to better advantage? i may have a way to do this. also how about the back of a stamp. when i put a stamp or cover up for sale, i try to put images of both sides, esp. if there is an expertiser's mark or defect on the back, or a cancel that needs to be shown. after all you don't buy a pig in a poke. if a seller says he has an signed copy, then show me the money, give me an image of the back. that will surely sell the item without any problems. a picture is worth a thousand words as they say. these are just a few things i would like to see done on the site. thanks for your kind attention.

Why have check-boxes for these?
An honest seller who sells a non-cancelled stamp should describe the exact condition of the gum and add a scan of the backside... Else there is always the possibility of asking a question...
Adding 10's of checkboxes I think, will 'overload' the description...
also a list of common colors in the major languages would be very helpful and can be obtained from one of the major catalogs.
Could you precise to me the goal of this list? Is it for translation reasons?

If the scan is not detailed enough, I just ask the seller to add a bigger scan. Every scanner works differently and everybody just needs to learn with his scanner.

Same here, there is not much Seb or the site can do about this. ASK the seller for an other scan. If he does not give it there most possibly is something fishy about the item...

hi all,
let me clarify my ideas as to why they are needed. my former profession was in nuclear medicine technology and then finally 10 years with the u.s. postal service before retirement on disability because of my war wounds from vietnam. in medicine, i was a scientist who used many differing terminologies to describe measurements for radiation, patient histories, physiology, chemistry, etc. and so-on. and the same goes for the postal service for various nations. my aim was to simply be able to put in place internationally recognized philatelic symbols that could be checked off to help describe our material. that is it, simple like using the smileys when making this thread. as for the color chart or list, many varieties exist for issues especially in colors. but i find in some foreigin language catalogs it is difficult to decipher which color they are talking about, so having a list of colors in major languages that one can check off would also prove to be a useful tool for the seller. as for the scans, i realize each person may not have the ability or knowlege on how to best use his scanner, but i am sure someone can offer basic tips on how to improve their techniques. i may even find information for you on the internet to do this. and if i do, i will certainly share it with my friends on delcampe. thanks for your input and i hope seb is reading this. take care and a bientot, bill (cajunsr. auctions)

Hello,
I understand your goal in a 'standardisation' of description, being able afterwards to sort them like in a database on type,state,color,.... so that you would finally arrive at a search/identification tool in which you could select all lots of your interest and do not have to run through multiple 'useless' (for your interest) sales...
It would truly be marvellous, but I suspect the response of the seller could be low. The 'professional' sellers here, who do represent 25-30% of all sales here, will very possibly see the use of checkboxes as useless, seen they mostly write short description, with all necessary details... You know, working with the mouse, slows everything when putting on lots... For such a system to work really everyone should adapt it, which is (highly) unlikely in my opinion...
A list of colors in different languages might be interesting, in your view, i agree.
Still the same question stays: Will the seller go to the extra trouble if he knows that the interested buyer will simply ask a question?

hi moondude,
do you think seb will answer these questions too? i thought that was what this section was for, a direct input to enhance the site. but i always appreciate constructive criticism. i ain't no g.w. bush. unfortunately, he is around for 4 more years. i voted for john kerry as i am a purple heart vietnam veteran with my only son in iraq as i speak. thanks for your participation in this somewhat limited debate.

As a buyer I would occasionally like to search lots based on those
symbols. While searching MNH lots currently works without problem,
searching with ** or * does not because of the special meaning of
asterisk.
For me personally it also matters if a stamp is mint hinged (MH) or
mint lightly hinged (MLH), the latter meaning that the stamps's
gum is minimally disturbed, hinge has been removed completely,
and that there are no hinge remnants attached to the stamp.
Obviously it would require sellers to check the condition of
stamps more carefully when listing them.

I suggested on this French forum to split the Mint category into a MNH and a hinged categories, and/or
to discard the special meanings of * and ** in order to allow a sorting within the Mint category.
I then ask Seb directly and after some time I receive a courtesy answer stating that "it will be hard to do but we will work on this topic when time permits". Which topis (asteriks or splitting) I do not know.

I would favour generally splitting just into the Mint category
(including MNH, MLH and MH) and the Used category.
In the Mint category freetext searching by "**" and "*"
would be supported, e.g. by using an escape character,
such as \. Thus \*\* would search for MNH lots, and a
single \* would search for MLH and MH lots. If the escape
character were omitted, asterisk would have its usual
meaning.
Sellers are encouraged to describe whether a hinged stamp is
MLH or MH (or MHH). That's because in my opinion MLH would
sell better than MH (at least I would be more eager to buy MLH
lots than just hinged lots).

hi y'all,
first i wish everyone a happy holidays and new year. i see this has become an interesting subject with lots of response except from our webmaster. it will certainly be up to seb to make the final determination as to what is put into the auction site for us sellers and buyers. our suggestions for improvements are just that-suggestions. we must remember that the science of computer programming must be utilized to make these things happen and that isn't always easy. the cajun used to be in nuclear medicine years ago and ran CAT scanners when they first came out in the early 70's. back then programming was in its infancy and very simplicistic. now it is very complex and time consuming so we must respect the time seb puts into the site in upgrading the requests we want. thanks seb for all you do. and happy holidays to you and your family.
