Wood sculpture - Anna Selbdritt Ensemble
Visitors to the parish church of Prügg are greeted by a small Gothic statue situated on the pillars of the organ. Created around the year 1520, it is the only existing figure proven to have been sculpted personally by Styrian artist Lienhart Astl. The group of figures consists of three persons from three generations of the Holy Family. St. Ann is seated in the center lovingly embracing the Christ Child on her lap with her right arm. To her left appears the youthful Mary as she offers an apple to the Christ Child. Lienhart Astl was indeed one of the most famous sculptors to leave his mark in Upper Styria around 1500. Originally from Gmunden (Upper Austria), the sculptor furnished the region of Upper Austria and Upper Styria with individual sculptures and carved altars and was actively supported by his large studio and numerous colleagues. The high altar of the parish church in Hallstatt is considered his greatest work. Creations from Astl´s studio are also evident in Prügg, Gröbming and throughout other churches around the Grimming Works. Astl´s period of creativity in Styria only lasted from 1515 to 1520. The motif of this special issue stamp is just one of the many treasures of the "Styrian Kripperls", as Peter Rosegger once described the beautifully situated village of Prügg.
